If the box is red then the majority of the money is on the lay side and if the box is blue the majority of the money is on the back side. The percentage figure is determined by the weight of money formula selected in settings. This is a valuable indication of what direction the price will move.

What is the ladder displaying?
The ladder displays the same information as the Betfair grid but in a format more appropriate for Betfair trading. The ladder displays how much has been bet but remains unmatched while the Betfair classic grid displays how much can bet bet and matched. Read that again and make sure its clear!.
For example, in the Betfair grid shown below the 2.7 odds back box can accommodate 344 back bets, which means that 344 lay bets are currently in the market unmatched and waiting for a back bet to match them. The ladder shows these bets as a red bar signifying that there are 344 unmatched lay bets in the market at odds of 2.7 waiting to be matched.

Placing a lay bet If a lay bet of odds 2.68 is required then left click the mouse on pink box to the left of the 2.68 price on the green price ladder. This bet would join the unmatched queue behind the other 830 unmatched lay bets and a gold unmatched bar would appear.
Place a back bet If a back bet of odds 2.68 is required then left click the mouse on the blue box to the right of the 2.68 price on the green price ladder. This price will be matched immediately because there are lay bets available to match the back.
Selecting a betting stake
There are six preset stake buttons and a net button, selecting one of the stake buttons turns it green to indicate what amount stake will be submitted when a bet is placed on the ladder.
The six preset stake buttons do not change but are configurable in settings to display your preferred Betfair trading ladder stakes.
The Net button displays the imbalance between all matched back and lay bets, this is because when trading back and lay bets must be equal to form a complete trade. This button is used when, for example a bet is partially matched or canceled while being matched, which would mean one of the preset stakes would not be able to equal the matched amount. In this example the Net button would display the imbalance amount and if the Net button is selected and a bet placed, the stake size would equal the net imbalance and enable a complete trade to be performed.
Canceling a bet
Canceling an unmatched bet is simple, just click the gold unmatched bet that is no-longer required, this will immediately issue a cancel bet order to Betfair.
Additional indicators
To help keep a visual track of the last bet placed without continually checking the matched bets table a ladder bet indicator can be activated in settings. When activated the last matched back or lay bet will be displayed on the price ladder, the price cell will turn pink on blue indicating that the last matched bet was a lay or a back respectively.

Moving the ladder
The price ladder can be centered around the current Betfair market activity by simply double clicking the green price ladder. The scroll bar to the right of the ladder can also be grabbed and moved with the mouse. The ladder can also be moved using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
